John M. Clyatt, PSM – President
John is a third generation surveyor and has been involved in the surveying and mapping field since 1976. His career with Pickett began in 1985 and he became a co-owner in 1987. As President, he is a guiding force behind the company’s direction and focus, and constantly seeks to expand and hone our service offerings. In 1995, he added photogrammetric mapping to our services and in 1997 formed an aerial acquisition company, US Imaging, Inc. (USI), to complement and enhance our mapping and geospatial services. USI is the aerial imagery and LiDAR acquisition arm of our company. He remains a hands-on leader and resident expert in many areas.
John’s experience includes boundary and topographic surveys, PLSS retracement surveys, land acquisition appraisal mapping and surveys, Ordinary High Water Line determination, quantity surveys, control surveys, aerial mapping, and contract administration with private and government agencies.
He graduated from the University of Florida in 1983. He stays actively involved with his Alma Mater’s Geomatics Program Advisory Committee and is a past Chairman of UF’s Advisory Board for the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, which has programs in Geomatics, Forestry and Fisheries. He is an active Life Member of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society where he served as President in 2002/2003 and is past Chairman of the FSM PAC and currently serves as Director on the PAC committee. He is a member of the national organizations of ASPRS, NSPS and MAPPS, and is a registered land surveyor in Florida, Alabama and North Carolina.
Mike Schnell, PE – CEO
Mike has more than 30 years of engineering and business management experience relating to power system engineering, transmission line design, surveying, drafting, permitting, and contracts. He joined Pickett in 2012, originally as part of U.S Imaging.
As CEO, Mike’s responsibilities include setting the vision and strategic direction of the company, developing the culture and overseeing the company’s overall performance. As such, he is involved with the accounting, financial, legal, contractual, rick management, marketing, and human resources aspects of the business. He is responsible for day-to-day management decisions and for implementing the Company’s long and short term plans and objectives.
Mike’s areas of technical expertise include project management, planning, design and operations of electric transmission systems, and transmission conductor ratings development. At Tampa Electric Company, he worked his way from Engineer to the Director of Power Engineering and Construction (a subsidiary of Tampa Electric) over the course of 13 years. In 2001, he co-founded and became President of PowerComm Engineering, which was later acquired by a private equity firm.
He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and completed his MBA at the University of Tampa. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the AUSVI, a Senior Member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer in Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
Mike Leahy, PE, PSM – COO
Mike has more than 25 years of experience in the design and management of electric transmission lines, substations, and telecommunications towers, as well as 25 years in the land surveying industry. He joined Pickett in 2012, as part of U.S. Imaging.
As COO, Mike directs, administers, and coordinates the internal operational activities of the organization. He’s a leader in the development of the corporate mission and preparation of short-term and long-range plans. His responsibilities include ensuring that our clients are totally satisfied with the products and services we provide.
Mike is experienced with transmission line design, structural analysis, power line routing studies (including community outreach), project management, and the application of LiDAR and PLS-CADD to the electric utility and telecommunication industries. Formerly CEO of PowerComm Engineering, he also has more than 10 years experience as a Senior Transmission Engineer with Tampa Electric Company.
He graduated with a civil engineering degree from Virginia Tech and completed his master’s in civil engineering at the University of South Florida. He is member of AUVSI and ASCE, a registered professional engineer in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, and a licensed professional surveyor and mapper in Florida and Georgia.
Gregory A. Prather, PSM – Vice President, Surveying, and Company Safety Officer
Gregory has been involved in surveying and mapping since 1980. He manages the daily operations of Pickett’s Surveying Division and the Company Safety Program. His responsibilities include safety, scheduling personnel and equipment, maintaining project schedules, budgets, billing, and client relations. He is a hands-on leader who still spends considerable time in the field assessing field conditions and planning and estimating projects.
Gregory is experienced in and also supervises construction staking, geodetic control surveys, DTM creation, volume computation, retracement surveys, and Ordinary High Water Line determination. He has been involved with GPS positioning since 1987 and has extensive field and office experience with Trimble GPS software, receivers, and data collectors.
He began his career with Pickett in 1983 as a survey crew member. He became a Florida Registered Surveyor in 1992 and a company partner in 2003. He is an active member of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society and the Florida Builders Association.
Jeff Young, PSM, CP – Vice President, Mapping
Jeff has been involved in the photogrammetry field since 1983 and has been a company partner since 2003. He is responsible for the daily operations of Pickett’s Mapping Division. His duties include scheduling personnel and equipment, monitoring cost and schedule controls, planning and submitting cost proposals, and providing continuous QA/QC on all projects. Jeff is highly experienced in all aspects of stereo compilation, aerotriangulation, digital elevation and digital terrain modeling, planimetric and topographic mapping, LiDAR, wetland ecology, orthophoto generation, and volume calculations.
Originally from Ireland, he received extensive photogrammetric training at BKS Surveys, Ltd. in Northern Ireland at the onset of his career, and later migrated to their U.S. office in Washington, D.C. He began his career with Pickett in 1995, became a licensed Florida PSM in 1995, and a nationally recognized ASPRS Certified Photogrammetrist in 1997. He is also licensed in South Carolina and Virginia.
Tom Bennett, PE, PMP – Vice President
Tom has over 16 years of professional experience in the power and telecommunications industries. He founded the engineering services company High Power Development, acquired by Pickett, in February 2013 and remains a principal in the business.
Tom is responsible for project management at Pickett, including workflow, budgets and schedules, client satisfaction, and overall company project performance. He is involved directly with our clients in all aspects of their projects, and ensures that Pickett performs to client expectations.
E.J. Benton, PE – Director of Engineering, Mid-Atlantic
E.J. is responsible for Pickett’s Raleigh office, and is focused on producing timely and high quality deliverables from Pickett’s engineering division, which he joined in 2013. He develops quality work processes and procedures that incorporate efficient error elimination strategies, such as team review stages and effective day-to-day work practices. He is also active in management, business development, and engineering.
Whitney Maynard, PE – Director of Engineering, Southeast
Whitney is responsible for all the engineering and day-to-day operations of Pickett’s Tampa office, including supervision, workflow, and client satisfaction. She joined Pickett’s engineering division in 2013 with professional experience in both the power and construction industries. Focused on ensuring quality deliverables and client satisfaction, she is a key part of the day-to-day operations of Pickett, including project development, engineering management, workflow, and business development
Craig Emrick, PSM – Director of LiDAR Operations
Craig began his career at Pickett and Associates in 2009, as a Lead Project Surveyor specializing in boundary and topographic surveys, wetland surveys, ALTA/ACSM title surveys, construction staking and ‘as-built’ surveys. Mr. Emrick continued his education and training, eventually becoming Director of LiDAR Operations within Pickett’s Aerial Mapping division, managing aerial resources, data acquisition, LiDAR data processing and associated ground surveying.
Craig has been involved in surveying since 1993, graduated from UF’s Geomatics Program in 2002 and received his FL PSM in 2004. He manages the daily operations of Pickett’s Airborne LiDAR Department including; logistics, planning, data acquisition and processing, classification, and maintaining the quality of final deliverables.
